Decentralized Waste Water Management (WASH) in schools
Description
The Azraq Basin is experiencing a devastating environmental disaster due to the over pumping of its groundwater resources for the use of increasing population and agricultural demands. Although the efforts to rescue the reserve have started already in 1994, the lack of national consensus on the proper actions to rehabilitate the reserve has limited its progress.
In the face of increasing water scarcity, the local schools have been the hardest hit, as the demand for water has drastically increased and the old water systems become extremely pressed since the introduction of the morning and afternoon shifts to accommodate the learning needs of both Jordanian and Syrian refugee kids.
The project aims at easing the current pressure on the selected overcrowded local schools’ water supplies, at the same time making sufficient water resources available to all their students – Jordanians and refugees alike.
The project’s activities include:
1) Rehabilitation of water and sanitation systems of four public elementary schools.
2) Development of training materials for teachers and schools regarding Jordan’s water status, different factors affecting water status, proposed solutions, and best water management tools and practices at the household level and in schools.
3) Conduct of knowledge enhancement and behavioral change activities in schools, including through distribution of information materials that encourage water-saving practices.
