Making Sahab City Green

Description

The project is located in Sahab City southeast of the capital Amman – one of the poorest communities in Jordan with percentage of poverty reaching up to 54%. It has a total population of 150,000 Jordanians in addition to another 40,000 Syrian refugees and migrant workers.

Sahab is located in a strategic industrial and commercial location; it is considered a commercial gathering point for all surrounding cities and villages. It also has an international street connecting the capital Amman to Aqaba in the South and Saudi Arabia and Iraq in the East.

Sahab City faces multiple environmental challenges created by its vibrant economic and industrial activity. For overcoming those, the project has supported Sahab City to become a pilot in the EU Southern Partner countries in addressing local sustainable development challenges, particularly related to energy. During the course of the project, we have completed the following main activities:

1) Supported Sahab City to develop and implement sustainable energy efficiency and renewable energy plans and projects.

2) Launched a set of renewable energy demonstration actions in Sahab that are suitable for replication by other local authorities, provinces and networks in the region.

3) Coached Sahab City to join the EU Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy and created twining cooperation with municipalities within the region and across the Mediterranean Sea.

4) Organized awareness campaigns for Sahab City residents on renewable energy and climate change.
